Leadership & Executive Coaching

Every Leader Deserves a Place to Think

Serving in a leadership role is a privilege. It's meaningful work that can have a profound impact on your team, your organization, and the people you serve. But leadership can also be surprisingly lonely.

Vanessa Volz, leadership and executive coach

Do you serve in a leadership role?

Whether you're leading a nonprofit, managing a department, directing a project, or serving as a CEO, there are decisions that ultimately rest on your shoulders. Even when others weigh in, you're the one accountable for the outcome.

I know that feeling because I've lived it for most of my career.

I've spent the majority of my professional career in leadership roles – from serving as the chair of different nonprofit organizations to working as the Executive Director (and then the President/CEO) of a rapidly growing housing and victim services agency.

Leadership and executive coaching offers something that many leaders rarely have: confidential space to think. It's space to untangle difficult decisions, test ideas, examine blind spots, and move forward with greater clarity and confidence. I know how powerful that resource can be, because I've worked with executive coaches myself at different points in my career. It's one of the primary reasons I decided to pursue coach training and accreditation.

Because I know what it's like to hold so much responsibility as a leader, I also know firsthand that you don't need another management book.

You need somewhere to think.

  • Somewhere to say the things you can't say in a staff meeting.
  • Somewhere to test ideas before you act on them.
  • Somewhere to admit uncertainty without worrying that someone will mistake it for weakness.

You need someone to partner with you; someone to hear you express the thoughts in your head out loud in a safe, confidential space, without judgment.

Maybe you need someone who will challenge your thinking, help you see a situation from a different angle, ask better questions than you've been asking yourself, and hold you accountable to the goals you've set.

Leadership might feel lonely, but it doesn't have to be. Leadership doesn't have to be something you carry alone.

Coaching isn't consulting. I'm not going to tell you what to do or pretend I know your organization better than you do.

But I do bring nearly two decades of executive leadership experience in rapidly growing organizations operating in crisis environments. I've made decisions I'm proud of, and I've made decisions I wish I could do over. Both have taught me a great deal about leadership.
